WHICH COSMETICS ARE SAFE FOR TEENS?

It used to be that numerous young women went through their teens and twenties unaware of what they were putting on their skin in the form of lotion, soap, deodorant, hair care, conditioner, toothpaste and cosmetics. They took for granted that if a personal care product was available for purchase at a drugstore chain, it was obviously safe. But this desire for cosmetic beauty, even among teenagers, presented increased exposure to many harmful chemicals.

The ordinary young woman uses 15 cosmetic products in her everyday routine. According to experts, these products contain more than 100 chemical ingredients, many of them unhealthful. Presently there is no federal regulation for personal care products, and companies are at liberty to employ chemical components in any amount they choose. According to Teens for Safe Cosmetics, a California based organization, only 11 percent of the 10,500 chemical ingredients utilized in personal care products have been screened for safety.
